Albert's Pilot Hat

Albert's Pilot Hat

Please note: this is a printed knitting pattern. It is not a digital download.

The Albert’s Pilot Hat is a snug, practical little hat worked from the top down, designed to keep little ears warm.

It’s worked in the round, with the earflaps shaped separately back and forth for a comfortable fit. A button closure keeps everything secure, and you can finish it off with a pompom if you want a bit of fun.

This is a great, quick project that makes a really useful gift.

Sizes

0–3 months (3–6 months) 6–12 months (1–2 years)

Gauge

22 stitches × 30 rows = 10 × 10 cm in stockinette stitch on 4 mm needles

Needles

  • 4 mm double-pointed needles
(or use Magic Loop if preferred)

Yarn Requirements

This hat can be knitted in two ways:

Option 1: Hold two strands together

  • Use a 4 ply / fingering weight yarn (200–250 m per 50 g)
  • Held double throughout

Option 2: Single strand

  • Use a DK weight yarn (approx. 100–120 m per 50 g)

Approximate Metreage

  • Held double (4 ply): ~420–470 metres total
  • Single strand DK: ~100–150 metres total depending on size

You’ll also need a small amount of contrast yarn if adding a pompom.

Choosing Your Yarn

For babies, this is best in something:

  • Soft and gentle on the skin
  • Warm without being heavy

If you hold yarn double, you’ll get a thicker, cosier fabric with a bit more structure.

If you use a DK yarn on its own, you’ll get a simpler, quicker knit that still holds its shape well.

A yarn like Big Cool Wool is a great option here — easy to work with, soft, and perfect for a cosy baby hat.
