Baggy Hat

Baggy Hat

Please note: this is a printed knitting pattern. It is not a digital download.

The Baggy Hat is exactly what it sounds like — relaxed, easy, and just that little bit slouchy at the back.

It’s worked from the bottom up in the round, with a simple rolled edge and gentle shaping at the crown. It’s the kind of knit you can pick up and just enjoy, while still ending up with something that looks effortlessly good.

You can wear it snug or knit it a little longer for more slouch — completely up to you.

Sizes

To fit head circumference:
50–54 (55–58) 58–62 cm

  • Small = children
  • Medium + Large = adults

Finished Measurements

  • Width: 19 (21) 23 cm
  • Length: 25 (28) 31 cm

(Length can easily be adjusted for more or less slouch.)

Gauge

19 stitches × 28 rows = 10 × 10 cm in stockinette stitch on 4.5 mm needles

Note: This hat is designed to relax slightly with wear, giving you that softer, slouchy fit.

Needles

  • 4.5 mm circular needles (40 cm)
  • 4.5 mm double-pointed needles for crown shaping
(or use Magic Loop if preferred)

Yarn Requirements

This hat is worked holding two strands together:

  • A fine merino or 4 ply yarn (approx. 200–250 m per 50 g)
  • Held together with a soft halo yarn (like mohair or brushed alpaca, approx. 200–220 m per 25 g)

Approximate Metreage

  • Fine yarn: ~235 metres
  • Halo yarn: ~210 metres

Choosing Your Yarn

This is where the magic of this hat really happens.

The combination of a smooth yarn + a soft halo strand gives you:

  • A light, airy fabric
  • That slightly fuzzy, relaxed finish
  • A hat that softens and drapes beautifully as you wear it

If you want a cleaner, less fuzzy look, you can swap the halo strand for a second fine yarn — but you’ll lose a bit of that softness and drape.

Difficulty

★★☆☆☆ (2 out of 5)

A lovely, straightforward knit — perfect if you want something easy with a really wearable result.
